Study Task 1, Type Journal - OUGD404

TASK - Document, Organise and Evaluate and ongoing investigation into type and typography using the principles, practices and examples introduced during the studio workshops as a starting point.

Around Leeds I noticed the type for 'Graze', a small coffee shop which I think has effective use of typography. I think the different uses of weights within the same typeface work well in conjunction with one another:


This is the logo of the hairdressers I go to. When I was there I couldn't help notice the shop logo. I do not find this type visually effective as I cannot help but think the 'l' is out of place. It does not follow the same structure as the rest of the type and I am unsure why, the elongated stem has no reason to be that taller than the rest of the letters. I also do not like the second part of the sign 'Hairdressers' due to it being a different font and uppercase. I think it would have worked much better with the same font throughout as both words would have linked better:
