BRIEF - Produce a set, series or sequence of ten letterforms, which explore and communicate your interpretation of the word that you have selected from the randomiser. Using research that I will gather I will focus on the manipulation of existing letterforms in order to solve this problem.
My chosen typeface was 'Futura' and my chosen word was 'Physical'.
After brainstorming into my typeface 'Futura' and my word 'Physical'. I started sketching down some initial ideas that came to mind when I first thought of Physical. I began to think about the body and bone structure and looked into how I could interpret this. I researched into ball and socket joints and started my letters from this:
Another concept I initially thought of was 'physics' (as it was on my definition on physical). I thought of graphs and equations and below where some rough ideas from this concept:
Again thinking about the concept 'physics' but looking into the atoms and other scientific ways I could represent this:
After some basic ideas, I began developing more solid concepts. Below I thought about a physical representation. I looked into the anatomy of the body and thought I could re-interpret this for the anatomy of a letter. I used negative space and took things like bowls and counters to represent the letter. I quite like the visual outcome but not sure how this could be done for all letterforms:
After looking back at my basic ideas, I began to develop the graph concept. I extended the stems on both 'A's to represent line graphs and also experimented with adding a graph within the letter (left) to see if that would be visually appealing:
After I looked into bone structure and researching how the body was put together, I developed this letter below. I like the concept but this does not communicate as well as I would have hoped. It looks quite child like and informal. I may try this digitally or straighten the gaps on the stems so if this improves the outcome:
The same concept as the previous idea. I re-created these digitally and still did not get the outcome I would have liked. I tried thinking of other ways letters could connect but these again where not visually effective:
Some digital experiments on current and new ideas, playing around with other concepts that could possibly communicate 'physical'. These and the previous experiments are what I took into the interim critique:
Work after my Interim Critique:
In my critique, I got some really positive feedback. There are some ideas I definitely want to explore. Below I started thinking about about adding serifs to the Futura letterform to give it a more physical, strong presence. I think it is a very subtle change but I feel it comes across well:
In my critique, my peers liked the idea of my initial graph concept. However it was suggested that I could explore this more and think about other types of charts and graphs. With this is mind, I looked into pie charts and developed a 'P' and 'D' from this. I tired one block colour and the other outline. If I were to use this idea, I would definitely develop the outlined 'P', as I feel you can tell the letter alot clearer and communicates the sections of a pie chart more than the blocked letter. On this design board, I also developed my bone structure concept. Instead of thinking about the joints so literally, I squared them off which still shows the idea of them connecting together but gives it a more appealing finish. I also tired this concept on a lower case letter which also worked well:
I developed on the idea of graphs but a few of the letters did not communicate well. I then thought of the waves and equations within physics and researched into this. In my research I liked how 'waves' are represented with solid and dashed lines. I then developed an idea out of this, which I'm not sure whether looks child like:
Below, I was thinking about forces within physics and how it could possibly pull a letter apart. However, I think it could also communicate the body and how they could physically link together. I think with this having a double meaning I feel it is a strong enough concept to develop onto one of my final 10:
Instead of thinking so far from my word, I went back to thinking how I could interpret 'physical' straight away. I then created this letterform below to show the strong and boldness physicality of a letter:
More concepts on physics, equations and atoms:
Finals and Evaluation.
Below are my final 10 letterforms. I am overall pleased with these as I have explored a range on possible representations with the word 'Physical'. Although in my final critique it was said to me I may have gone too far from my word, they still visually work well. I agree with this feedback but didn't want to be too obvious with my word and so explored other definitions I was given and this is my reason for exploring it further. I designed my final 10 onto watercolour stock as the texture had a physical feel to it as it was raised slightly and thought it would link nicely to my original word. I feel my 'M, A and L' are strong enough concept that communicate my word and will take one of these onto Brief 2 to create these into a full typeface.
