BRIEF - To produce a set of 3 high impact posters. These need to communicate an identified message from my research into my chosen article in Brief 4. They need to work as part of a set but also work individually. The posters will need to be one type, one image and one type and image.
I started off by thinking about my type and image poster. After looking at my research I liked the idea of using info graphics for this poster and so thought of initial ideas below. I knew I want to use some sort vector shaped imagery to represent the animals and so worked with this concept from the start:
I started off by thinking about my type and image poster. After looking at my research I liked the idea of using info graphics for this poster and so thought of initial ideas below. I knew I want to use some sort vector shaped imagery to represent the animals and so worked with this concept from the start:
My initial ideas for my image poster was the concept of using the percentage statistics that I found in my research. I used this idea to show the percentage through the illustration of a animal or brain, that would represent not only the percentage but with the animal, the red would represent the hurt it goes through and the brain the behavioural side. I am unsure whether the brain would communicate for a animal. I feel if you were to see this you would think of a human brain. With this in mind it may not be the best possible outcome to use.
I also looked at a animal testing video. The first image I saw on this, was a cat that had been experimented on and because of this had different shaped eyes. I then took on this idea and thought of either representing this as a vector or I could take my own imagery and manipulate them in some way:
When looking into my research, these key words below are what grabbed my attention as they are both shocking and horrendous. I knew from my research, using these in some way would be the best outcome as a visually impacting typography poster. I then played around with composition and layout:
I created vector shape images of animals that are listed in the statistics I found. I experimented with sectioning pieces from one another to try and represent the testing and dismembering the animals go through:
I then used this same concept on a brain. However thinking back to my original idea, I think it would not represent a animal clearly enough. I feel it would communicate the wrong the message and so I will carry on with the animal vector rather than the brain:
I also tried representing a brain through a pie chart, linking both the animal and the statistics. However, with this concept I could not create the right proportions, also it is not strong enough as a stand alone image. I do not think it would be memorable, which would then in turn not be visually impacting:
I carried on experimenting with other animals and explored showing a statistic within them. I like the simplicity of the idea and think it would successfully communicate the concept I am trying to get across. Below, I sectioned the animal to not only give a clearer representation of a statistics but to also show the pain and testing like dismemberment. I started a colour scheme of white, grey and red as in my research most of the animal campaigns use this. I thought it would not only be a clear link to my message but the red would also communicate the pain and death of the animals and the grey and white would contrast the red nicely:
I then thought about my typography poster. I used the same key words I found in my research and what I had experimented with in my initial ideas. I started to experiment with colour, typefaces and layout:
These are my most developed ideas and the strongest posters. I chose to go with a sans serif typeface as I think it will communicate the impact I am trying to get across rather than a serif. I used Helvetica Bold as I think a regular would not have the same impact. I again carried on with colour scheme I had used in my image poster to carry on the link:
I then developed more animals to go on my type and image poster. I decided to create an info graphics piece to communicate the information and shocking statics and figures of animal testing:
I included pie charts and graphs to show my information and developed on these when creating my poster. I again continued the colour scheme but played around with the opacity even though it is the same colour. I added the vector imagery in and started developing the layout and composition of my facts and figures:
Work after my Interim Critique
The interim critique I found really helpful. It was done in a way I was not used to, as I left my work to speak for itself and my peers gave me anonymous feedback on post-its. The majority really helped when developing my final posters.
However, as the interim critique and final critique where only a day apart my posters did not change a great deal. I made the necessary changes to the posters from the feedback I received and then they developed into my finals.
Finals and Evaluation
These are my final posters. How the final critique was set out, I did not get much feedback in terms of how I could improve these but I do however think they answer the brief. Most people said they where high impact and worked both as a set and individually. I am overall pleased with these posters however I do think they could be improved with further research and if I had more time, would develop them more from the interim crit. I think they communicate my concept, and think the colour scheme works well.
