Design Process 'Concept' Task - OUGD405

TASK - In a group, produce a concept for either a Bar, Hotel or Restaurant and create a two minute presentation on the final outcome.

In my group we decided to come up with a concept for a hotel, as we thought this had the most room for expansion. We started brainstorming and early on thought of a strong concept of thinking about uppercase letter for a up market themed hotel. From this we developing further and thought about the divide between hotels i.e. there are either middle/upper class elaborate and expensive hotels, or budget student hotels. Thinking about this divide, we developed on the idea of upper and lower case letters, thinking about a hotel that dependent on budget you would purchase a lowercase lettered room or a uppercase lettered room.
This we thought we be extremely interesting to stop people having to choose, it would not play on 'class' but it would give people a choice at their price range, with still a enjoyable atmosphere and not classes as a 'snobby' or 'budget' hotel. We then would have a wide target audience and would be suited for locations situated in city centres. We thought early on to have a theme of black and white as it is neutral while still having a sophisticated feel. As a group we then were brainstorming ideas for the name of hotel, we decided on 'CASE' that relates to either 'upper or lower' case letters and also plays on the idea of travel and having a travel 'case'.

We then thought about features within the rooms themselves. We came up with ideas such as, the uppercase room would be at the top or the hotel and lowercase letters at the bottom, playing on the idea of an alphabet. We would have the concept running throughout the hotel as in the menus, signs, towels, dressing robes etc would all be in upper or lower case letter dependant to the room you are in. We discussed each room been assigned a letter rather than numbers, which dependent on the room you are in, the towels etc would be in that letter i.e. Lowercase g, would have a 'g' embroidered on the pillows, towels etc. We thought this would give it a personalised touch to whichever room.
We also thought about how the room would be different according to price. We discussed continuing the theme within the furniture i.e. Upper lettered rooms would have four poster beds and tall, elegant lamps to get the concept across the letter is taller and more proud. The smaller rooms would be still as pleasant however the furniture would be a lower price range i.e. not four poster beds.
