Design Production, Brief 3 - Study Task 9: Search Engine Optimisation - OUGD504

What Is SEO?

"Search engines use algorithms to asses the suitability and ranking of websites based on search terms." Generally these are assessed by how many people link or access the site. Alterations can be made to a website to match the criteria of SEO use to find sites.

Page Authority - how likely a page would rank high on a search based on the SEO. It will asses how well it has been put together based on certain SEO, content, links etc.
We can asses all the SEO factors on a score out of 100 and worked out by mathematically algorithms. If in the future I make a website that is due to go live, it would be beneficially for me to check this before hand.

Page Factors:

On The Page Factors: - Content
                                      - HTML
                                                - Architecture

Off The Page Factors: - Links
                                                                            - Trust (have to be genuine)
                                        - Social
                                             - Personal

Violations: - Irrelevant
                            - Weak Content
            - Spam
                            - Paid for Links

The periodic table of for SEO success factors. - add image.

Google Talk Tips

Webmaster Tools.
Background check on domain - check keywords.
Include analytic codes.
Strategy in site design - utility.

TASK - Research further into SEO, think about different strategies and effectiveness. Then make a list of possible SEO changes and adjustments that I could make to my website.

"All major search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo have primary search results, where web pages and other content such as videos or local listings are shown and ranked based on what the search engine considers most relevant to users. Payment isn’t involved, as it is with paid search ads."
There are a number of important factors with SEO and here are some of the basics:

Words - Search engines will narrow down the pages with certain words in.

Titles - Search engines use the titles of the website as it summarises what the site is about. This is very important, however we may not ever see the title because it is in the code.

Links - Links between websites matter too. When one website links to another, it is usually a recommendation, telling the viewer another site has other good information. A website with a lot of links, can look good to a search engine.

Words In LinksIf a word is linked to a site, and when this word is typed into a search engine, the website will rank well and been seen by more users.

ReputationSites with consistent, interesting and informing content with a growing number of quality links, will do well in search rankings.

These basics above have helped me to understand SEO far better than I previously have done. I now understand certain words and phrases are all key in making my website a success. I have looked into a more in-depth way of looking at SEO below on the periodic table. They discuss ways I can apply these factors to my own website to make it have a successful search ranking. Although all the previous basics are important with search engine optimisations, one of the most key factors are the content of the site. It has to engage readers and be phrased correctly to get the best out of SEO. If the coding is correct and factors such as the links and description are to a high level, ranking factors will increase. The website can then build a reputation, improving the SEO of the site.

With my website I can build a reputations by showing other coffee links on my site, directing readers to find different coffee stores near them and taking them to their websites. (As I have included a locator on my site). I think this shows I could build on my links as the website grows.

How I Would Make Adjustments To The Coding:

<html>

<head>

<title>Origin, Coffee, What Does It Say, Find Coffee Stores</title>

<meta name="description=" content ="Origin explains the study of what a coffee order says about your personality in a fun and informative way. People can upload thoughts and opinions on the study. It also provides a store locator to find the nearest coffee shops">

</head>

OTHER FACTORS TO CONSIDER:

Treat each page of your site as an individual page:
Remember that from a search engine perspective each page of your site is considered to be a separate entity and the page will be ranked accordingly. You need to apply the basics of effective search engine optimisation to each individual page.
Choose appropriate key words or phrases for each page:
Phrasing matters. Many more people search for the term "effective search engine optimisation" than for "effectively optimising for search engines". To find out which key words or phrases are more popular than others, you can use a tool such as Google AdWords Keyword Tool; enter your chosen phrases and you'll see how many people searched for that term recently.
Give each page an appropriate title (55 characters or less in length):
The title describes the document and is very important for SEO. It should include the key word or phrase at least once. I so often see sites that use the name of their business as the title of all their pages. Is every page of their site about their business? Probably. But chances are really low that people will be searching for their business' name!
Put the key words or phrase that you've chosen in the page's title tag, and meta description:
Make sure that the meta description is as appealing as possible, because some search engines actually use this description in the search engine results pages that people will be reading.  The keywords meta tag is no longer used by Google and discouraged by Bing.
Monitor keyword density:
Be sure your chosen key words or phrase is repeated judiciously throughout the content of the page. You don't want to overdo it, or your page may be rejected as spam, but you need to repeat it enough times that the search engine's software will consider the phrase relevant.  One - Two percent is considered optimal, that is for an article of 100 words the key word/phrase should appear once or twice within the article.
