Study Task 1, Type Journal - OUGD404

TASK - Document, Organise and Evaluate and ongoing investigation into type and typography using the principles, practices and examples introduced during the studio workshops as a starting point.

Diego Giovanni Bermudez Aguirre

This range of sketches by Diego Giovanni is a set of hand rendered type, which I love. I particularly like his difference in type and that he experiments with a range of line and stroke weights. I find it interesting to see that it is not one font he has chosen to experiment with, there is a clear range of roman to script typefaces.

“The sketches are performed in order to reflect and explore different options for each communication” - Diego Giovanni Bermudez Aguirre

You can tell instantainsly that he has explored and developed his ideas and I also love seeing these sketches rather than a finished product as you can see how the type is developing.

Rodrigo Xavier Cavazos

This typeface sketch by Cavazos really interests me, I find his use of squaring things like the stems and bowls are visual effective. I like the idea of the bowls not joining up, especially on the lowercase letters but perhaps this does not link all the way through the typeface. Although I think it is a interesting font, I think it may be a bit over flourished and possibly did not need all the over exaggerated stems and desenders?

Ross MacDonald and Susan Archie

These typefaces have a clear origin of wood. I especially like looking at the letter pressed type has it has an appealing printed finished quality. I also love the use of colour and how the type is overlayed on one another, this is in comparison to the ‘Red Fox Chasers’ as I like the experimentation within the composition and layout. I am not particularly keen on the typeface itself as I feel it looks squished, especially in the counters.

Todd Childers

“I am interested in synthesizing fonts from the combination of geometric sans serif with traditional black-letter or modern with medieval versal.”

You can really see his interest with this roman type due to the mix of layers. Each layer brings something knew to the letterform, giving each a unique quality which I find extremely interesting. What also makes this effective is his use of colour, as they blend well together and so is not restricted. The overlay gives the type a sense of freedom and this is also shown by the gaps within the letters i.e. the space between the crossbars and stem of the H.

Tom Geismar

This type by Geismar has an interesting mix of line weights, which I like the use of. I think it has an interesting contrast between the strokes, which gives it a geometric but balanced quality.
