Design Production, Brief 1 - Development - OUGD504

After looking through my research and discussing ideas with my peers I decided to develop the paper fold below. I feel this type of fold reflects my design process the most effectively. It shows both how I tend to conceal my work at first, then I will grow in confidence with it, as well as having a structure that shows my organisation within my process:

I have started off by sketching down a few thumbnails based on the grid the fold gives me. I have tired to incorporate the structure of the folds into my designs, again following on from this idea of organisation:

I much prefer this top left design (below). I feel including the folds into my design and using block colour will help pin point certain aspects of my design process. I think doing sections will be far more effective as apposed to an info graphic or map due to the nature of the fold. I think I will take this idea forward and start to now develop digitally:

I have began by measuring out the gird I will use for my leaflet. I have used my mock up version to get the correct measurements to make sure the fold will close correctly. I am going to make this leaflet 30x30cm as I feel this is a suitable size for when the leaflet is both open and closed.

I began breaking the gird into how the fold would show by using blocks of colour to help define them. I have worked out in which direction the leaflet will fold to make sure the blocks of colour will be in the correct place.

Following on from my initial sketch, I knew I wanted stages in the leaflet to show my process. I wanted to categorise these to small sections as I feel this will be easier to follow than pinpointing everything I do. I am only wanting a small amount of content as I feel the fold I have chosen explains the process for me.
I have now developed the type of number system I am thinking about. As these are going to be section I wanted them to follow on from one another. Because of this I was not sure whether to have full stops or a continuous '…' as this shows the process been ongoing:

I experimented with arrows and lines and feel this shows my process being ongoing far better. Not only that, but something I pin-pointed when developing initial ideas was that I always use arrows to organise my notes. Because of this I feel using the arrows not only shows a clear ongoing link with each stage, but shows a personal trait, making this more individual to me:

I was not entirely sure what colour I wanted my leaflet to be. I began experimenting with different colours that I feel represented me as a person. I have decided to keep with a yellow colour, I feel I always tend to use purples and blues and so wanted to chose something completely different to what I normally do. I feel in choosing yellow contradicts the idea of the fold and being hidden away. As I want to be more confident in my design process, feel the contradiction is well suited as it shows I can be proud and confident with my work as the colour is so loud and intense.

I lightened the yellow for a more high-impacting colour and then began experimenting with the type. I began playing around with different compositions. I started off with a title case and began scaling the type to decided which would be most suitable:

I knew something was not working within my experiments but could not figure out what. I added body copy but knew this was making the layout worse. I then tried changing the type into uppercase which made the type seem more like a title, which is exactly what I was hoping to achieve. I also changed this to the yellow to link both sides of the block colour together. Due to having a uppercase and heavy block type for the title, feel even though it is yellow, it is still legible. I am only having a small amount of body copy as I feel it will make the leaflet less overwhelming to read.

I added type and numbers to each of the sections to try and get an idea of how this will look once body copy is on:

I am now looking into the typeface I will use. I have previously used Helvetica to get a quick view of what it will look like but knew I wanted something more individual. I know I am going to chose quite a block, structured clean sans-serif as I feel this shows me and how I prefer my work to be clean and organised. I have experimented into types such as Gills-Sans, Century Gothic and Avenir. As I quite like the numbers on Avenir feel I will go for this type. I am thinking of using both medium and heavy for the titles and body copy. I have applied triangles in the same colour scheme to my 'My Design Process'. This was show a clear link between the title and the rest of the leaflet:

I thought there was something missing within my leaflet. As I had overlaid the triangles on my title, I experimented doing the same on sections of the leaflet. However when I did this feel it lost it's clean cut look and started to seem cluttered. For this reason I am going to stick with my original.

I have now done a quick print of my leaflet for the upcoming critique. This was to see whether the fold matched the design as well showing a live version for people to comment on in the crit. I was pleased it turned out well, but feel I need a little more practice folding this correctly as the colour was not exactly on the fold in some of the sections. I will print this out again practicing with the folding before I print properly. I will also need to try out a number of different stocks to make sure I print on the most appropriate when it comes to my final.

I have recently had a critique on my first printed leaflet. I did not really receive much feedback on this apart from questions on what should be on the back. I am going to experiments with things like block colour on the back for when the leaflet is folded up. I am going to take it as though I can move onto creating my final as there was really nothing negative said in the critique.
