In a studio session workshop we were asked to create different paper experiments to get to grips with different folding techniques, as well as thinking about possible folds we could use for are leaflets.
Bamboo Fold:
I feel this type of fold would work well as a leaflet showing the 'design process' due to having individual sections and tabs. I feel though, as this has so many folds, I would not be able to produce this to a high enough standard that I feel this type of fold would need:
Double Folder Fold:
I feel this is a rather flamboyant, over-top fold. For this reason I do not feel it would suite my initial ideas or personality in anyway. I do however, like how again the folds create sections that could possibly be used for the idea of a 'process'.
Flat and Cube Waterfall Fold:
The waterfall folds I quite like. This is due to how the fold creates sections that could possibly show part of the work - enticing the viewer to open up and look further.
Further Experiments After The Workshop:
I initially thought I could develop my concept of 'confidence and hiding my work' through the fold I chose. I initially thought I could do a simple envelope fold that fastens - building on the idea of concealing something. Although I think this could be an appealing idea, after looking at some of the folds in the previous workshop and through an informal critique with my peers, I could perhaps think of a more interesting fold that still shows the same theme.
From this I started to play about with possible ways I could close the leaflet. I again used a envelope template, however with this idea I could create something that folds out almost like a concertina. The idea would be when the envelope opens up, the folds create the different stages of the design process. I think this could work well with my initial ideas too:
Would need to be made with a bigger stock to create enough folds to show the different stages:
I thought about different ways I could show the leaflet to be closed:
With this fold I developed on the idea of a more interesting envelope. I think how the folds create a simple but effective structured look could be a striking visual once finished. I like how the angles of the envelope would show the structure and organisation that I need in my design process. The only problem with this fold, is that it cannot close in on itself. Perhaps it does not need that?
Once opened I could use the folds to show the different stages of my process:
I then experimented with a couple of origami envelopes. I did not like finished look on either as I felt there were too many folds which started to warp the stock. Even with a thinner stock, I feel when I start to design on a fold like this, think the design would be ruined in the process of folding.
I then came across another fold that closed in on itself. I liked how it came across a small package that looks as though it could not be opened but when it does, develops into a big scaled piece. I think this fold would be ideal for my concept of concealing my work, as it shows I may not want to show my work at first but I can grow it confidence just like the leaflet "grows" when opened:
I also think when opened the folds are very structured and concise, much like my design process itself and how I like to be organised. I feel this will be represented well through this fold should I go with it.
