Design Production, Brief 2 - Initial Ideas - OUGD504

BRIEF - To develop and produce a logo for a 'kickstarter' brief of my choosing. Kickstarter is a resource in which members of the public can pledge money into up-coming projects. I will need to think about my chosen project carefully as I will need to outline the needs of the project to come up with a successful logo. I will also need to think about a branding strategy for whichever project I go with.

I have begun looking into possible kickstarter projects I may want to look into. I am wanting a project that I feel has the necessary room for expansion. I feel if I choose something that is highly developed with a successful brand behind it already, there would be no point in trying to create something else. I am also wanting something that will engage me fully and something that I will find interesting. I have wrote a few possible projects that I like the sound of and wrote down the main points of each so I can compare which one will suite me the most:

I had a few projects in mind but narrowed it down to two that I found the most interesting. The first one being a skincare range called 'The Little Hop Shop', were as the second was a food catering business called 'M.A.D Food Co'.

The Little Hop shop are a unique home/bath range that uses the antiseptic and calming properties from the Hop plant in their products. They have launched a new range that tries to show a new way to reuse hops into products that can be appreciated by all. They have a few products on kickstarter such as 'stache wax' and 'beard oil' for men while also doing uni-sex products such as candles and soap.

The M.A.D Food Co is a catering company that is on kickstarter to take them 'to the next level of catering'. They say they are true to their tag line 'Catering by Design', as they have a high standard of food presentation as well as designing the event accordingly to the venue. This is what drew me to this project as they say 'Catering by Design' but the logo has no element of interesting design work what-so-ever.

I was un-sure which route to go down and so discussed this with a tutor. We discussed how we thought  'The Little Hop Shop' had more room for expansion as a 'brand' compared to a food catering business. He said there was more routes I could explore with a home/bath range. For this reason I have decided to use The Little Hop Shop as my chosen Kickstarter project.

What Is A Hop?"Hops are the female flowers (also called seed cones or strobiles) of the hop plant. They are used primarily as a flavouring and stability agent in beer, to which they impart a bitter, tangy flavour though hops are also used for various purposes in other beverages and herbal medicine."

I began by creating some sketches based on the initial ideas I had looked into. I began looking into what a hop plant actually looks like and began exploring ideas based around the plant itself.

I then began looking into how I could show the plant in some way as opposed to an image of one. I then began experimenting with the idea of creating typography that was influenced by the plant in some way. Whether it be elongating the stems of certain letters of adding flourishes that could represent the leafs. I also looked into how I could simplify the plant, as it is a very layered detail plant, I wondered if there was some way in showing this in a simpler form. I then realised I quite liked the look of the hop plant and would not want to lose any of its detailing as this is what makes it so interesting. I will carry on exploring this idea of the hop plant influencing something for my logo.

I looked into the anatomy of the Hop plant and looked into the seeds, stem and leafs of the plant. This was to see whether I could gain any influence or inspiration from different parts of the plant. I am still very unsure on which route I will go down but is something I am going to discuss in the up-coming critique. I know I need something that will be effective but reachable in the time frame as it is only a week long brief.

The Interim Critique

In the crit I had shown the initial sketches I had been working on. It was said that they much prefer the idea of the plant influencing type or something, instead of a full image of a hop. I was slightly worried the kind of type I have been looking into may have been too feminine for a unisex brand and so brought this up in the crit. My peers suggested that if it wasn't too over flourished they thought this would not be a problem which I was pleased with. I think I did not articulate myself well in the critique as my peers suggested to start looking into more beer and masculine ideas. I do want to look into beer glass typography but as for it been masculine I need to bare in mind this is supposed to show 'luxury and handmade' elements, rather than focusing on one specific gender. I will outline this in my 'brand/logo requirements' (task 1) so there is no confusion in the future.
