Responsive, 'Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit' Penguin Book Cover, Initial Ideas - OUGD503

BRIEF - To re-design the cover for Jeanette Winterson's - Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit. The book should show an imaginative concept and appeal to a contemporary readership.

'This is the story of Jeanette, adopted and brought up by her mother as one of God’s elect. Zealous and passionate, she seems destined for life as a missionary, but then she falls for one of her converts. At sixteen, Jeanette decides to leave the church, her home and her family, for the young woman she loves. Innovative, punchy and tender, Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit is a few days’ ride into the bizarre outposts of religious excess and human obsession.'

Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit is going to be a rather a short brief within the responsive module. For this reason the outcome will need to be an interesting but direct response. The brief began by reading the book, and highlight key points and features within it. This was to take any themes that were of any interest to see whether these could be used as possible concepts. From the brainstorm sketches were produced, illustrating the more interesting themes that were picked up on. Ideas using key items from the church such as a wine glass, steeple and the cross were produced as well as using fruits to illustrate the name of the book. There were also ideas of using secrets as a possible theme, illustrating this through lock and key imagery. As the outcome needed to be interesting yet concise as possible, the idea of using a wine glass will be used.

The concept being, taking the themes of bread and wine that represents the Lords Super, which communicates the themes of the church, this would be shown through a glass of wine. The femininity of the glass shape, represents the female character within the book. This shows the main themes within the book without being overly obvious. The idea will be created through photography. Trying to capture the shadows created by the glasses to communicate the hiding and secrets the character goes through within her life.
